Munich’s startup scene is growing rapidly: a market value of 164 billion euros and rising investments characterize the ecosystem. Yet despite this success, women in founding teams remain significantly underrepresented. This is shown by a current analysis by Dealroom and Munich Startup.

Startups in Munich employ over 118,000 people worldwide today. 43,200 of these positions are in the region around Munich. That’s an increase of 15 percent compared to 2023. The companies analyzed by Dealroom and Munich Startup are therefore not only growing abroad. They are also creating many positions in Munich and thus contributing to the economic growth of the region.

The total value of startups in Munich is 164 billion euros. Ten years ago, it was still 32 billion euros. However, the largest part comes from Infineon Technologies. Yet many other companies are catching up. Startups founded since 2010 together bring 77 billion euros in market value to the table. These include Celonis, Helsing and Personio.

Capital from investors leads to more employees

Startups that receive money from investors generally hire more people. Accordingly, companies with over 100 million euros in capital employ an average of 180 employees. For comparison: startups without investor capital employ an average of only 14 people after ten years. In 2024, Munich startups raised 2.3 billion euros. In the first half of 2025, another 970 million euros came in. This makes Munich a strong location for young companies.

According to the report, most jobs are created in the areas of health, finance, AI and deeptech. For the latter, around 16,000 people work in Munich, which corresponds to a share of 36 percent of all positions in startups. Artificial intelligence also plays a major role. Around 12,000 people work in this area.

Startups with female founders create more jobs

First the good news: startups with at least one woman on the founding team create more positions per euro invested than all-male teams. For every million euros, these companies create 3.1 jobs. With male teams, it’s only 2.4 positions. Overall, 2,900 jobs in Munich are attributable to companies with female founders. Well-known names include yoummday and Mynaric.

Despite this performance, women remain significantly underrepresented in the founder scene. Only 18.8 percent of founders in Germany are female. Last year, this share even declined. There are also major differences in access to capital. According to a survey by consulting firm Ernst & Young, 1,633 men received fresh venture capital last year, but only 194 women. The share of investments in exclusively female-founded startups was only one percent – the previous year it was two percent.

An imbalance is also evident on the investor side. Depending on the country, only five to fifteen percent of female investors sign the checks for startups. This was the result of a study by the European Women in VC network.
