Munich climate tech Turn2x has raised €20 million in a Series A financing round. The startup plans to use the capital to scale its e-methane technology and set up additional production sites following the launch of a commercial plant in Spain.

Turn2x doesn’t just produce synthetic methane: The Munich startup relies on comparatively small, modular plants to produce a gas that is chemically identical to fossil natural gas and can therefore, according to the company, be transported via existing gas infrastructure and used in existing applications.

20 Million Euros for Additional E-Methane Plants

The Series A financing round is led by Antwerpen Ventures. Existing investors LEA Partners, First Momentum Ventures and Verve Ventures are also participating. First Momentum initially invested in Turn2x in 2023.

In addition, according to investor statements, several industry experts are participating as business angels, including Tilman Weide, formerly of Linde Engineering, Christoph Zinsser, former Head of Project Finance at Stegra, and Marcelino Oreja, former CEO of Spanish gas grid operator Enagás.

The fresh capital is primarily intended to fund new commercial plants in Spain and other markets. At the same time, Turn2x plans to further reduce production costs for e-methane and expand its team.

Turn2x Produces E-Methane From Green Hydrogen and CO2

The process combines two feedstocks: renewable hydrogen and biogenic CO2. First, water is split into hydrogen and oxygen via electrolysis using renewable electricity. The hydrogen then reacts with CO2 in a methanation reactor to form methane.

Technologically, Turn2x relies on a so-called honeycomb reactor. Instead of a conventional fixed-bed reactor with bulk material, the startup uses a metal body featuring numerous narrow channels whose surfaces are coated with catalyst material. The design is intended to dissipate heat particularly quickly, thereby enabling flexible load changes.

This is key to economic viability: methanation can be adapted more closely to the availability and price of renewable power. As a result, Turn2x can run its plants primarily when wind or solar power is plentiful.

According to the company, eleven patents have been filed for the reactor and the process.

9 MW modules designed to produce e-methane decentrally

While numerous power-to-gas projects rely on large central production facilities, Turn2x pursues a modular approach with 9 MW units. Among other locations, these plants can be installed directly at biogas facilities, where biogenic CO2 is readily available as a feedstock, avoiding additional CO2 transport.

Turn2x estimates the potential capital expenditure advantage of its architecture at around 30 percent as part of a European Innovation Council project.

Turn2x plant in Spain already producing renewable methane

Turn2x has already been operating a pilot plant in Brandenburg since 2019. However, the company took the decisive step toward commercialization in Spain: a commercial plant went into operation in Miajadas in the Extremadura region in 2025.

In September 2025, Turn2x signed a power purchase agreement with Axpo Iberia, with Aquila Clean Energy supplying the renewable electricity. Axpo describes the facility as the first in Spain to produce methane as a Renewable Fuel of Non-Biological Origin, or RFNBO.

For Turn2x, this step is important because commercialization opportunities for synthetic fuels depend not only on technical production, but also on regulatory verification.

According to investor First Momentum, the plant’s entire production has been sold via long-term offtake agreements. In total, Turn2x puts the volume of already concluded offtake agreements across its project pipeline at more than one billion euros.

RED III Increases Demand for RFNBO Fuels

In parallel with technical scaling, the regulatory market for synthetic fuels is shifting. The revised EU Renewable Energy Directive RED III stipulates that RFNBOs must account for at least 42 percent of hydrogen used in industry by 2030; by 2035, the target increases to 60 percent. For the transport sector, the directive sets an RFNBO share of at least one percentage point within the respective fuel mandates by 2030.

Germany is tightening requirements as well. On April 23, 2026, the Bundestag approved an update to the greenhouse gas reduction quota. It outlines an increasing minimum quota for RFNBOs in the transport sector, with industry sources estimating it at 0.1 percent in 2026, 1.5 percent in 2030, 5 percent in 2035, and 10 percent in 2040.

This is creating an increasingly regulation-driven demand for synthetic fuel providers. However, whether and how quickly a large market for e-methane emerges will depend not only on quotas, but above all on production costs, the availability of cheap renewable electricity, and suitable CO2 sources.

Turn2X

Turn2X was founded in 2022 by Philip Kessler, Dominik Schollenberger, and Benedikt Stolz. Kessler had previously built and sold the startup Understand.ai, while Schollenberger conducted research at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) on the methanation technology that serves as the foundation for Turn2x’s development.

Founding Team Combines Startup and Methanation Expertise

CEO Philip Kessler co-founded Turn2x with CTO Dominik Schollenberger and COO Benedikt Stolz. According to the company, Schollenberger’s years of research at KIT form the technological basis for the methanation reactor.

The financing round also expands the operational expertise surrounding infrastructure projects. Florian Antwerpen, who is leading the round via Antwerpen Ventures, is joining Turn2x in European project development. He previously co-founded battery storage developer Kyon Energy, which was acquired by TotalEnergies in 2024.
